Ragdoll cats come in a vast variety of beautiful colors & patterns. Ragdoll colors include chocolate, seal (black), blue, lilac, flame (red), cream, cinnamon, & fawn. They come in four different types- traditional, mink, solid, & sepia. Mink, sepia, & solid Ragdolls have been around since the creation of the breed, & all of these colors are recognized as pure-bred registered Ragdolls under TICA. The Ragdoll patterns include mitted, bicolor, colorpoint, tortie, & lynx. Ragdoll cats color continues to deepen & darken as they mature, until they are up to 3 years old, with the exception of solid Ragdolls, which are born with their full coat color. The Ragdoll breed is well known for their blue eyes, fluffy coats, large size, distinctive facial markings & floppy laid back personalities. Below are descriptions and picture examples of the different colors, types, & patterns.
Traditional-
Traditional Ragdolls are the most popular, commonly found Ragdoll type. They are born completely white & start slowly acquiring their color between 4 to 14 days old. Their color continues to come in until up to 3 years. They are the lightest of the four types. Traditional Ragdolls are well known for their bright, beautiful blue eyes.
Mink-
Mink Ragdolls have a thicker, plusher coat than the other coat types, often with an extremely plush tail. The coat of a mink is very smooth & soft. Minks have a richer colored coat than traditional Ragdolls as well. Minks are born with their coat color, but it continues to darken for up to 3 years of age. Minks are pointed (darker ears, face, feet, & tail), but their body color is darker than traditional coats. Minks normally have blue green aqua colored eyes instead of the blue eyes that the traditional Ragdolls have. Aqua eyes can vary from blue with just a small hint of green to almost fully green eyes, but the most common is an ocean blue aqua color.
Sepia-
Sepia Ragdolls have substantially darker coats than their mink siblings. Sepias are pointed (darker ears, face, feet, & tail), but their body color is darker than traditional & mink coats. Where mink Ragdolls usually only have aqua colored eyes, sepia Ragdolls can have green, gold, or blue, but the most common eye color is aqua or green. Sepias can only be bred from two mink or sepia parents.
Solid-
Solid Ragdolls are the darkest and highest contrast of all the Ragdolls. Sepia, mink, & traditional Ragdolls are all pointed & have varying shades of color throughout their coat, but solids do not have this variation. Their coat is one solid color. They have a very soft, thick coat, similar to the mink & sepia Ragdolls. Solid Ragdolls can have green, gold, blue, or a rainbow of other eye colors, but most often have green or gold eyes. They are born with full color, and do not darken or lighten as they mature. Their coat color always remains the same.
Seal-
Dark brown, almost black color. While the other three types in seal have a very dark brown color in appearance, the solid seals are completely black, making them the only black Ragdolls.
Chocolate-
A softer brown color. The difference between chocolate & seal is like dark and milk chocolate.
Blue-
A light gray/blue color. Blue Ragdolls have a very soft appearance to them. Blue is the dilute of seal.
Lilac-
A very light brownish-gray coat with a white undertone. It is a less common color. Lilac is the dilute of chocolate.
Flame-
A stunning orange/red color. Flame is a less common color. Flame females are very hard to come by, as the parents must be a very specific combination.
Cream-
A softer orange/red color. Cream is the dilute of flame. It is very difficult to tell the two apart.
Cinnamon-
A light red/brown color. Cinnamon is one of the most rare of the Ragdoll colors, making it very sought after in breeders. Cinnamon & fawn are the only colors traditional Ragdolls cannot come in.
Fawn-
A soft brown/gray color. Fawn is the dilute of cinnamon. It is the least common of all the Ragdoll colors.
Bicolor-
Bicolors have a white "mask" on their face that resembles an upside-down V. Their noses & paw pads are bright pink. They have white legs & a colored body. They are the most popular Ragdoll color.
Mitted-
Mitted Ragdolls have, as the name suggests, white mitts on their paws. The mitts on the front paws are evenly matched & stop where the paw bends. The mitts on the hind legs extend up to the middle of the leg. They also have white chins that extend into a white stripe on the belly. Their noses match the color of their coats.
Colorpoint-
Colorpoint Ragdolls, also known as point Ragdolls, have full colored legs & faces with no white markings. The points also appear darker, with well-defined color on the ears, mask, feet, & tail. The nose & paw pads match the point’s color.
Lynx-
Lynx is basically a fancy word for a tabby Ragdoll. Lynx Ragdolls present in all three Ragdoll patterns, bicolor, colorpoint and mitted & can be found in all colors. Lynx Ragdolls have tabby stripes with distinct ‘M’ shaped stripe lines on their face. Their eyes are outlined with white.
Tortie-
The word tortie is an abbreviation of tortoiseshell as the coat resembles the mottled shell of a tortoise. The coat of a tortie Ragdoll cat combines two colors other than white, either closely mixed or appearing in larger patches. Tortie Ragdolls are always female.
Torbie-
A torbie is a rare mix of tortie & lynx. They appear to have softened stripes over their tortie coats.
Blaze-
A Blaze is a white patch located on the face of a cat. They can come in all shapes & sizes & appear as a spot, strip, hourglass, star or diamond shape that extends from the cat’s forehead to its nose. Some blazes are so large that they cover almost the entire forehead, while others are just a small patch of white. Blazes are only found in mitted Ragdolls, not bicolor or colorpoint.
